I am delighted that my commitment to introduce School Cycle Buses to Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown is coming to fruition. Draft guidelines have been produced by the council and are now in final committee stage.

Meanwhile, a pilot route is being organised by the parents of children from Ballinteer Educate Together school. The Cycle Bus route will begin at the bottom of Ballinteer Avenue and make its way to the school in Churchtown, using mainly estates and parks for its journey. Volunteer parents will lead the convoy of cycling children.

I am working with council engineers to ensure that the selected route is in optimal condition. I really want this initial Cycle Bus to be successful so that it can serve as a model for hopefully many others across the county.

The School Cycle Bus initiative will encourage lots of children to be fit and healthy and has the potential to take many cars out of the school run, ultimately reducing traffic congestion. If you encounter the Cycle Bus on your commute, please be patient and give them a friendly encouraging wave.
