If a family member’s disability means your home no longer suits their needs, the Housing Adaptation Grant for Disabled People can help cover the cost of changes that make it more suitable, from access ramps to bathroom adaptations, stair lifts and extensions.
The grant is open to a disabled person who needs the adaptation works carried out, or to a homeowner applying on behalf of a family member with a disability living in the household. It is administered by your Local Authority.
How the grant works
The effective maximum grant is €40,000, which may cover up to 100% of the approved cost of works, whichever is the lesser.
Applications are means-tested on gross household income, which is available to households earning up to €75,000 a year, based on the registered property owner and spouse’s income in the previous tax year. Child Benefit, Carer’s Allowance and Fuel Allowance are excluded from this assessment, and further income disregards apply for children, students, care arrangements, housing costs, and residential or homecare fees.
Types of works covered
- Access and bathroom works. A ramp or other ways to access the home, and bathroom facilities such as an accessible shower or a downstairs toilet.
- Lifts and hoists. A stair lift or through-floor lift, and fixed track hoists (excluding servicing, maintenance and training costs).
- Wheelchair access and extensions. Space for wheelchair access, or an extension, typically for a bedroom or bathroom, to accommodate a person with a disability.
